Hey,
I had an XP machine I played D2 on and ran it without using the CD which I thought was a great thing. I now have a Windows 8.1 machine that I had to use compatibility mode for D2 to run. I got it to run in a window but it still makes me use the CD (I HATE using the CD to play the game).
How do I get it back to that? I had to download the patch from battle.net and installed it to v113.d immediately. Is there some other thing I missed? I thought all newer patches had everything up to that point inside them. Do I have to install a different patch?

If the game is properly patched and running with admin permissions, it shouldn't require a CD. Have you right clicked on the game and selected Run as Admin?

If you installed the game from the CDs, you need to follow a few additional steps, as described in the patch.txt file in your Diablo II folder. Basically you need to copy all the '.mpq' files from the installation CDs to your Diablo II folder on the hard drive.

Downloadable Installer Support
- If all required Diablo 2 '.MPQ' files are installed on the
hard drive, the game will no longer require the CD to play.
For users that originally performed a 'Full Installation'
and wish to run without the CD, all '.MPQ' files should
be copied from the Diablo 2 CDs to the Diablo 2 directory.
Most users will only need to copy D2Music.mpq from the
Diablo 2 Play CD and/or D2xMusic.mpq from the Lord of
Destruction CD. Mac users will need to copy these music
files and rename them to 'Diablo II Music' and
'Diablo II Expansion Music' respectively.
Anyone who did not perform a 'Full Installation' will need
to re-install from CD again to ultimately play without the CD.
In this case, a 'Full Installation' is required, followed by file
copy step noted above.

To avoid this in the future, I advise you to register the game CD-key to your Battle.net account (the one you used to post on these forums) and download the client from here:
https://us.battle.net/account/management/download/

Yes I have.

I had registered this copy of the game (I have 2) on b.net but I was still using the CD to run the game.
If you meant to register it so I can download it in the future then I guess I'm good now!
I think I remember doing the mpq thing way back in the day and forgot about that part. I thank you for your help!

Moving those files around is only required if you're installing from a CD. If you've registered the game to your Battle.net account and download the game files, it's no longer an issue. Everything is downloaded into the right play to play without a CD.

I downloaded the game, and bought it from battle.net, it's not allowing me to play even with 1.14c downloaded. it keeps saying i need the cd. i'm very confused if somone could help me that would be appreciated

My guess is you had a previous installation of the game perhaps and a registry entry is still trying to use that version of the game.
Using the Windows regedit utility, delete the following key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREBlizzard EntertainmentDiablo II
Then uninstall and reinstall the games using the digital installers you downloaded.

Easiest way, on win10, could be the same on win7 and 8 and 8.1, here not running as admin
Put the CD in, go in the folder where the setup and installation.exe is and copy D2xVideo.mpq and D2xMusic.mpq into the d2 folder and bam no cd required

I just yesterday paid for the digital copy off the website and when i try to play the game it gives me an error saying the game doesn't exist and that i need to re download it to make sure it was fully complete. I deleted and re downloaded it twice now, has anybody else run into this problem and or now how to fix it?

Many problems with the digital copy, the best is with the CD no issues, never had one issue with it and now i found a way to play without the cd !

A long time back i played d2 with the disc. i then bought LOD off of the website and continued playing like that. a couple years later (now) ive lost the cd and rebought the base game of D2 on blizzard store. i install it and it works fine, get the update and all works good. i then go back to the store to reinstall my LOD copy that i bought years back. it fully downloads and then when i get to the install screen after if makes you agree to their terms, it gets to 2% download and prompts me to insert the play disc. can anyone please help me, this is very frustrating. thanks.

I bought the battle chest for D2 years and years ago and currently have the CD's for both D2 and D2 LOD which both the original game and the expansion have the CD keys on the disc sleeves. Problem is when i downloaded the client from the blizzard website and try to install D2 from it, it asks for a 26 character CD key, but the discs I have only have a 16 character CD key listed. Downloading from the CD's is no problem, but the website seems so much more seamless...

I have a gaming notebook without ODD :/

How do I get 2 more sets of code keys so I can install this on 2 new mule machines in the future?

you need to put D2video.mpq too for play without cd
